Description
Our Organic Carob Powder is made from the ripe, roasted pods of the Mediterranean carob tree. Often used as a caffeine-free substitute for cocoa, carob powder has a rich, naturally sweet flavor.
The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) grows mainly in southern Europe, northern Africa and some parts of the Middle East.
The bean-like pods of the carob tree contain a sweet pulp and hard, inedible seeds. To make carob powder, the pulp of these pods is dried, roasted and finely ground.
Carob has been used to flavor and sweeten food and beverages for thousands of years.
It is a popular substitute for cocoa and chocolate in cakes, cookies, candies, bread, pudding, drinks and more.
There are multiple benefits of using carob powder as a substitute for cocoa powder.
Unlike cocoa, carob is stimulant-free and does not contain caffeine or theobromine. Another benefit of carob powder is its natural sweetness.
Since cocoa is naturally quite bitter, sugar is typically added to cocoa powder to make it more palatable - unlike cocoa powder, carob powder doesn’t require any added sugars or sweeteners.
